The theatre's purpose is TO ENRICH THE CULTURAL LIFE of the greater South Bend community by: nurturing, educating, and developing local interest and talent in the dramatic arts, as well as the technical fields of theatre; providing a showcase--in primarily intimate settings--for the finest possible presentations of live, local theatre to area audiences; and through theatre, strengthening community bonds and building civic pride.
South Bend Civic Theatre is the oldest continuously-operating community theatre company in the South Bend/Mishawaka area.
Founded in 1957, it staged most of its productions after 1968 at The Firehouse, a local historic landmark located at 701 Portage Ave., in the city’s historic Park Avenue neighborhood. SBCT continued to grow and eventually outgrew the Firehouse.
Under the leadership of an incredible Board of Directors and then-Executive Director Jim Coppens, SBCT began exploring solutions for the need for more space. In January 2007, the beginning of SBCT’s 50th Anniversary year, Civic celebrated the opening of its new theatre home at 403 N. Main St. in downtown South Bend, in what was formerly the Scottish Rite Building. Through generous individual support as well as community and corporate underwriting, SBCT was able to complete construction on a new 3,500 square foot scene shop, renovation of a 209 seat Mainstage Auditorium and a 70 seat versatile “black-box” Studio Theatre in a span of time of little more than a year.
In November of 2009, a special gift to SBCT eliminated the mortgage on the facility, the final chapter on the capital campaign that has allowed the organization to experience exponential growth in impact and production values.
SBCT relies heavily on its volunteers to assist in the production of its ambitious Main Stage, Studio, and Family Theatre Series seasons. Backstage or technical, as well as “front of house” (such as ushering), positions are in ample supply.
There is room for any level of experience as long as you share a love of quality theatre, have a little (or a lot) of time on your hands and want to have some fun!
South Bend Civic Theatre welcomes all members of the community to participate in this truly collaborative art form. If you are interested please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to usher or volunteer in front-of-house, or email@example.com if you are interested in volunteering backstage. If you wish to receive emails about auditions and/or tech opportunities, sign up for the appropriate e-newsletter categories elsewhere on our site: sbct.org/subscribe.php
Individual or corporate donations to our Annual Fund support annual operating costs of the theatre and help keep ticket prices affordable. These contributions also help in the development of current and new SBCT programs enabling the Theatre to better serve more and more members of the community. Over the last six years, members have contributed more than $800,000 to the Annual Fund, helping to sustain and expand our programs for children and adults.
Donations can be made by mail to SBCT at PO Box 1146, South Bend, IN 46624 or online via PayPal. The link can be found on our website www.sbct.org--just click on "Donate."
