SB Tribune Staff Report

SOUTH BEND — Actor Kevin Kline didn’t make it. But Scooby Doo, Ronald McDonald, the Silver Hawks’ Swoop and some 2,000 others were there.

The Northern Indiana Walk to Cure Diabetes took place Sunday in Potawatomi Park with one of the event’s largest turnouts ever, raising more than $400,000.

“It was a great, great event,” said Beth Ernsberger, branch manager for the Northern Indiana Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The fundraising goal was $425,000. “We’re close to $400,000 right now and more will be coming in,” Ernsberger said.

“I just have to say thanks to the community.”

The walk raises funds through walker donations, sponsorship funds, the sale of paper sneakers and third-party events, according to Ernsberger.

JDRF Walks are held in more than 200 cities worldwide. The aforementioned Kline is national chair of the JDRF walks. (For the record, he was not scheduled to attend this walk).
